It is a priceless opportunity to be given a glimpse into what may have been the last human incarnation of a Master of Wisdom; of his character and actions, his thoughts and loving counsel, his faithful example for how life should be lived.

Such a glimpse rewards the reader of Love is a Radiant Light: The Life and Words of St. Charbel by Father Hanna Skandar. A briefly sketched biography, anecdotes of his life, and most importantly, his own homilies all bring us close to the saint and his profoundly inspiring and eternally relevant message, illuminating a divine expression of the spiritual path. “You cannot become a saint without becoming a human being first,” St. Charbel is known to have said.

Born on the 8th of May, 1828 into a pious Christian family as one of five children, his life began as Youssef Antoun Maklouf, in Bekka Kafra, the highest village in the mountains of Lebanon. His father died when he was only three, so his paternal uncle then raised him. The village priests taught him to read and write, and, from early in his life, he was known to have always carried a prayer book. Due to this and other saintly qualities noted by the local villagers, he was nicknamed “the Saint”.
