You have said that slightly over one million people presently in incarnation have taken the first or higher initiations. With the world population at approximately five billion, that means 99.98 per cent of humanity has the first initiation still ahead. What kinds of steps in consciousness is this group, virtually all of humanity, trying to take?

The main step forward for the group on the verge of the first initiation is the coming into awareness of the soul. That is why the soul moves the person into some connection with meditation during the two or three lives preceding the first initiation, usually beginning around 0.7 (if the first initiation is considered 1.0). Meditation is the process of coming into contact with the soul.

The first initiation is about gaining the first aspects of soul consciousness. This reflects itself in the lower man — as a physical, astral and mental reality — in the gaining of control of the physical elemental. That is the goal of the first initiation. It is achieved by raising the vibration to a point where the person is in control of the physical elemental. The physical, astral, and mental bodies are made up of tiny elemental lives of the etheric physical planes. Their activity dominates our life or we dominate them.

The vast majority of humanity up to that time are dominated completely by the activity of the elementals on each plane. The first step in gaining control is the reorganizing the life pattern in such as way as there is control. It is not the overcoming of desire (maya, or illusion) on the physical plane, but the overcoming of the activity by which maya manifests. When that is achieved, then the first initiation can be taken.
